What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?
A TBI is brain damage arising from some sort of trauma, such as an automobile crash. Contrary to what some believe, you don’t have to be traveling at a high rate of speed or strike an exceptionally hard object to suffer a TBI. Any kind of trauma to the head or neck can damage the brain.
There are two types of traumatic brain injuries:
- Open, when the skull sustains a fracture due to direct contact with a hard surface or object.
- Closed, which doesn’t include a break but can be serious because of the potential for the brain to swell and blood clots to form inside the skull.
Both open and closed head injuries can result in loss of consciousness or memory, personality changes, depression, and even death.
TBI Warning Signs
Traumatic brain injuries are often not diagnosed directly after a motor vehicle accident, and it can be difficult to know whether or not one exists. But there are several warning signs to look for:
- Confusion
- Inability to remember recent happenings
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
In a mild TBI (also known as a concussion), symptoms such as unconsciousness, confusion, and disorientation are usually present for less than 30 minutes. In the case of a severe brain injury, unconsciousness extends over 30 minutes and loss of memory lasts over 24 hours.
