South Bend, IN Personal Injury Attorneys Represent Those Injured Due to Winter Driving Conditions
Indiana Accident Law Firm Handles Seasonal Automobile Accident Cases
Being a defensive winter driver can reduce your risk of being injured in an accident. Practice these defensive winter driving maneuvers:
- Look further up the road, not just directly in front of you. Glancing one-half to a mile ahead, if possible, will allow you to identify hazards earlier so that you can avoid them.
- Don’t fixate on one thing when you drive. Don’t stare at the car in front of you. Instead, keep your eyes moving, glancing at the mirrors, looking to each side of your vehicle, and back at the road every few seconds.
- Make a plan. Some things to include: Don’t drive beside anyone for more than a few minutes, particularly large trucks. If someone is driving beside you at the same speed, either speed up or slow down so that they are in front of or behind you.
- Practice the three-second rule. Give yourself enough room to stop quickly when necessary. In dry road conditions, allow a minimum of two seconds of space between you and the car ahead of you. When visibility is reduced, leave at least a four-second space.
- Reduce distractions. Get rid of the distractions that you can control, such as cell phones, an unrestrained pet, and wait until stopped to adjust the volume or the radio station.
You can’t control what other drivers do, and you can’t entirely avoid driving in Indiana during the winter. But honing your defensive driving skills can help save you from somebody else’s poor driving, even in winter road conditions.
