Indiana Attorneys Focus on Pedestrian Accidents
Although automakers have made substantial investments to keep drivers and passengers safe on U.S. roads, pedestrian deaths continue to increase substantially. Between 2008 and 2017, the number of pedestrians killed in accidents rose from 14 to 19 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The NHTSA found that more pedestrian deaths (76 percent) occurred in cities and on open stretches of roadway (72 percent) compared to intersections (18 percent). The most dangerous cities for pedestrians with populations of 500,000 or more included Phoenix (5.57 per 100,000 people) Albuquerque (5.54 per 100,000), and Oklahoma City (4.39 per 100,000).
Most Dangerous States for Pedestrians
According to a report on pedestrian accidents entitled “Dangerous by Design 2019,” every hour and 46 minutes, a pedestrian dies in an accident in the U.S., and in the past 10 years, pedestrian fatalities have increased by 35 percent. According to the report, the most dangerous states for pedestrians included 1) Florida, 2) Alabama, 3) Delaware, 4) Louisiana, and 5) Mississippi. Indiana came in at number 22 with 725 pedestrian fatalities occurring between 2008 and 2017.
Some cities are taking positive steps to reduce pedestrian injuries and deaths. For example, Boston saw immediate safety improvement after lowering the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph within the city, and in Detroit, after defective streetlights were replaced in certain areas, pedestrian fatalities were reduced.
